A geologic record means something which is present in the Earth's surface between various layers of sediment. By determining which layer they are present in, geologists are able to understand the time period something was originally placed there.

Geological History is the history of the Earth's landforms and oceans over the period of the last billion years or so. It looks at the Earth's history through eras of millions or even hundreds of millions of years.
