Cotton is a bushy plant that is grown in different parts of the United States. In CA we plant our cotton by seed in the early spring and it grows all summer. The cotton plant has a flower that blooms and this flower becomes a cotton boll. The cotton boll is picked in late fall with a mechanical cotton picker. Before this can be done the plant has to be killed and this is done through a chemical application sprayed on the plant. After the plant is dead the machine goes through the field pulling the cotton off the boll. This takes several times to get all the cotton and it is put into big trailers that hold the loose picked cotton. It is then taken to a cotton gin where it is ginned, the seeds removed and baled. The seeds are used to plant the next year for the new crop of cotton.
Usually it means drunk (presumably having too much gin). However, it can mean excited or wound up if the context is clear that the person hasn't been drinking, like soldiers deployed to Southwest Asia or if someone comes down for breakfast all worked up.
Cotton pickle may be a brand name.
There were many different jobs on the plantation, there were things for when you were young, like toting water and finding firewood, and as you got older you took care of other children, pulled weeds, and ginned cotton. Once you were over twelve (usually that was how old you had to be) you could work out in the fields picking cotton.

The term "cotton belt" refers to a region in the Southern United States where cotton production is historically significant. This area has favorable climate conditions for growing cotton, including warm temperatures and adequate rainfall. The term can also be used more broadly to refer to any region where cotton cultivation is prevalent.
"To cotton" means to get along with -- you don't get along with fools well.
