Honey.
The bees build up a store of honey during the summer which they eat through the winter. Beekeepers will take a surplus of honey from the hive, but won't take all the honey there is. They also feed the bees with sugar syrup after taking the honey to make sure the bees have enough to see them through the winter.

As soon as the days start to get longer and the outside temperature starts to rise, the Queen bee starts to lay eggs in preparation for the coming season. It is important for the colony that there are enough bees to take advantage of the first nectar and pollen in the Spring. As soon as these new bees are hatched, the bees that survived the winter start to die.

In winter honey bees eat the nectar that they have stored. this helps them fuel their wing muscles, which they flex as a way of generating heat to help keep the colony warm.
