Hypertext allows you to click on a link and go somewhere else. It is used mostly in HTML on webpages. An example of an HTML hyperlink is <a href="page.html">My Page</a>. When you click on the link "My Page," you will see the file page.html on your browser.
I am not exactly sure what it does, but from my research I had to do for a class I know that it's what web pages do to dispplay documents, but I am not sure if all the web pages use this format or not. Also the inventor of this was none other than Sir Tim Bernes-Lee, from England.
Hypertext does not stand for anything. It is not an acronym nor an abbreviation of any sort.
