Ice does a number of things to Earth. If it covers a large area of the planet it changes the albedo of Earth reflecting more of the heat from the sun back into space and keeping our planet cooler.
If we have ice caps which are 1 km or even 1 mile thick over the continents the weight of all that ice pushes the land down, in some areas it is still rebounding, (rising), after the last glaciation.
Ice can do a lot of things, it can be put in a drink on a hot summers day to cool your drink down, you can use it as an ice pack when you have banged your head or hurt yourself.
