To immerse something is to submerge it in a fluid. If you push your rubber duck under in the bathwater, you have immersed your rubber duck. If you dip your face in the water, you probably have not immersed it. But if you put your whole body under the water (as Southern Baptists do when they baptise), then you have been immersed.

'Immersed' is also often used figuratively. An English speaker who emigrates to live in a wholly French-speaking country (such as Benin) is often said to be 'immersed' in French: everybody around her speaks French, she has few opportunities for speaking English. Similarly an agnostic who wants to find out about Southern Baptists might 'immerse' himself in Southern Baptist culture by going to live with a deeply religious, and unquestioning, family.
