IF THE BRAKE LIGHT(NOT A.B.S. LIGHT)IS ON,IT USUALLY INDICATES: LOW FLUID IN THE MASTER CYLINDER,(DUE TO LEAKS,OR WORN BRAKE PADS/SHOES) THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS APPLIED, OR A MASTER CYLINDER BYPASSING INTERNALLY. I'D SUGGEST GOING TO A SHOP THAT OFFERS A FREE BRAKE INSPECTION.LEAKS OR WORN FRICTION MATERIAL(SHOES/PADS) WILL BE FAIRLY OBVIOUS. BUT BE SURE TO GET MORE THEN ONE PRICE QUOTE IF THEY DO FIND A PROBLEM.DIFFERANT SHOPS,CHARGE DIFFERANT PRICES,FOR THE EXACT SAME REPAIR.

Power steering fluid is completely different from brake fluid and NOT interchangable. Don't know your car but in most cases the "brake" light in the dash is a warning light to indicate you have a serious problem with your brakes. Suggest you get it fixed immediatly.
