A:'Witch' is a medieval notion and the word is in the King James Version (KJV) because witches were a matter of interest to English-speaking people at that time. When we look at two examples, we find that the KJV at Exodus 22:18 says, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live," but the Jewish Rashi translation (which is presumably not influenced by the KJV) says, "You shall not allow a sorceress to live." The KJV at 1 Samuel 15:23 has "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft ..." while the equivalent passage in the Rashi version is "For rebellion is as the sin of divination."

The Hebrew books were written in brutal times, and were intended to stir up hatred against those who held different beliefs, particularly those regarded as 'sorceresses'. The hatred and brutality of medieval times were directed against so-called witches, so this term was more meaningful to readers than 'sorceress' or 'divination'.

Other translations such as the New International Version (NIV) follow the Jewish Bible in omitting references to witches.
