Catholic AnswerThe Sacred Chrism is what has been used to anoint kings, prophets, and priest throughout history, and throughout The Bible. The very name "Christian" comes from the Sacred Chrism as Christ was the anointed one, and all Christians are, as well. After our baptism with water, the priest anoints us with the Sacred Chrism, thus anointing us into Christ's priesthood, His kingship, and His role as a prophet.

from

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

1241 The anointing with sacred chrism, perfumed oil consecrated by the bishop, signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit to the newly baptized, who has become a Christian, that is, one "anointed" by the Holy Spirit, incorporated into Christ who is anointed priest, prophet, and king. (Cf. Rite of Baptism of Children 62)
