Heat conduction means that as heat is moved from one rock to another, it moves around in a circle, building up heat the longer it sits. It must be getting a continuous stream of energy, or it will end up cooling off.

Or... Conduction takes place when heat is transferred that is a simple answer.

Heat is created by atoms vibrating violently also known as 'Kinetic Energy'. Heat is transferred between atoms during collisions, when the heat is transferred, the atom conducted heat, and will continue to transfer that heat to any near by particles, the conduction of heat is possible in any of the four forms of matter.

What materials conduct heat and which do not?

Insulators do not conduct heat and are therefore non-metals. Metals do conduct heat, and vey well may i add. But, for the record, you're thinking of electricity. Potatoes conduct heat, and they're not metals.
