Best Answer

Chameleons are a species of lizard which has evolved a trait which allows them to alter their coloring to blend in with the environment. This camouflage has the benefit that it makes them much harder to see thus prolonging their lives. If applied to humans, the phrase could be construed as the revealing of a spy, traitor, or infiltrator amidst friendly ranks.
