Speaking in tongues is supposedly evidence of the Holy Spirit, since no human can really understand what is being said.

The Apostle Paul was dismissive of those who claimed to speak in tongues, although he was not prepared to alienate those who claimed this ability. He indicated a preference for prophecy, since this at least might be useful. In 1 Corinthians 14:4, Paul says "Whoever speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but whoever prophesies builds up the church." He then goes on to explain what he sees as the futility of speaking in tongues, summarising this in verse 19: "but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue."

To speak in tongues is to let the Holy Spirit to speak through you in a heavenly language , unknown to humans. The Holy Spirit knows our true needs so if you let Him pray through you he intercedes for you. Its absolutely amazing. Pentecostal, Apostolic, and Charismatic churches believe in this experience along with other Christian groups. The New Testament is where speaking in tongues is written about (Acts 2, 8, 10, 19 and I Cor 12-14).

Nevertheless, speaking in tongues is a dividing point in Christendom today. Some churches do not condone the experience, even though Pentecostal churches are the fasting denomination in Christianity. Harvey Cox, professor at Harvard University, wrote an interesting book on Pentecostalism: Fire from Heaven.

Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses believe in new revelation, like the Book of Mormon, and so do not teach this experience as essential--like Apostolics and Pentecostals.

Another View:

All throughout the Old Testament, the word "tongues" relates to a known world language. And this is the same in the New Testament.

On the Day of pentecost, the disciples received the gift of speaking in other languages, because the Jews who were there from different regions heard the disciples speak in their own language (Acts 2)

When Peter went to see Cornelius, the Gentiles who were there received the gift of speaking in other languages, because the Jews who were also there heard the Gentiles speak in their own language (Acts 10)

Paul says the gift of tongues is a sign to unbelievers. In other words, it is a gift that is given out on the mission field where Christians are spreading the gospel to other nations.

So clearly to speak in tongues is to be given the sudden gift of speaking in another language of the world in order to spread the gospel of Christ Jesus.
