Sounds like a possible spider bite.
Some people have abnormally severe reactions to mosquito bites. Instead of merely getting an itchy red bump that looks like a pimple at the site of the bite, the whole site swells up. A bite from an immature deer tick can also cause swelling at the site of the bite. Other insects can also produce the symptoms you describe.
