It can mean many different things but most likely he or she is lonely & frustrated. Can you bring your pet into the house to be with the family? A crate would work great for this type of thing. Bring a proper size crate inside and put your dog in that at night by your bed if he or she is not use to being in the house.

I always heard that if a dog howls at least three nights in a role, then death to someone you know will follow. It is an old wives tale. I don't know if it is true. I have only experienced it once, but person was dying of cancer. Three nights before he died, his dog howled every night.

What does it mean when your dog cowars when your other dogs enter the room?

Dogs have a strict "pecking order" and a dog who is lower on the order will display certain behaviors around a dog who is higher on the order such as cowering, tucking their tail, etc. Your cowaring dog is simply acknowledging its lower rank to the other dog/dogs.

Why would a dog howl for no reason?

There are lots of different reasons. Some because they are hungry or have infections. And others because they think they hear something or maybe they are lonely or something. We have a poodle and when we make howling noises at her she does it back and if we interrupt her while she is howling, She does it even louder and she does it longer. And we also have a beagle that we go off of the road a couple of days ago and he howls an awful lot and I think the reason he howls is because it is his nature to howl. All he does is howl and sleep so maybe it's because he was just born to howl.

Is your dog stressed when he howls?

You should be happy. The dog thinks of you either as the leader, or a high ranking member of the pack, so you howl, he howls.Howling is a throwback from your dog's wolf lineage. Wolves howl together as a form of pack bonding. They learn each others' howls, and use those howls as a means of communication when hunting or checking their territory for intruders. Wolves volley howls to keep in touch with other pack members. It's their way of saying, "I'm here, where are you?"Group howling helps reinforce those vital social bonds, so when your dog howls with you, he's really reinforcing his bond with you. However, there are inanimate objects that will cause a dog to howl-- like sirens or music instruments. This is because the pitch and harmonics produced trigger those howling instincts. It's like salivating when you smell something delicious. We're ingrained to perform certain functions based on environmental stimuli.
