Could be a power play thing, or could be he is telling you to make you feel more secure or encourage you to stay with him. It depends on the context of how he is telling you. If it's like 'I make this much so you do what I say', then it's a power/dominance thing. If it's like 'I make this much so we can start/have a good life together', then it's probably a security thing or a carrot to make you stay together.
