There are other reasons a girl / woman uses a ponytail that have nothing to do with not wanting to style one's hair.

Second, long hair can be hot, especially thick hair. A girl / woman with long hair can become accustomed to feeling cool by having the hair up off the neck. Other people question, "Why not just cut your hair", but liking to be cool and liking long hair are not in opposition to each other.

Third, a ponytail is a quick and efficient way to get hair out of the way when doing projects or housecleaning. The "tail" may flop to the front, but one bunch of hair is easier to control versus hundreds of hairs falling forward.

Fourth, in wintertime, long hair can easily get caught in coat zippers or buttons. It's never fun to pull ones hair out while it's stuck in a coat zipper pulled up to one's throat. If a hood has a string tie, it's even worse!

Fifth, in summertime or dry climates, static electricity can turn long hair into mini "sunrays" sticking out all over around the head. A ponytail prevents this kind of "up do" (up-in-the-air do!).

However, ponytails can cause headaches and scalp soreness. Ponytails can also lead to hair breakage. The hair should be let loose for at least a few hours every day.
