(how to update your sims 3) go to your game launcher and select game updates if it says that there is no updates just wait and then when you go to game launcher and it says that there is an update avalable then click yes then your game willl be up to date. hope that helps

You have to type the code at the back of your instructions book into the register game place on the website.

You can still play the game if you go to EA > The Sims 3 > Game > Bin > TSR.exe but I'm not sure how to actually fix the launcher. Sorry.
