This sounds very much like sleep paralysis, a harmless phenomenon in which a portion of the brain begins to awaken while other parts of the brain maintain the light paralysis that is normal during sleep. The sense of being held down or restrained by some invisible alien or evil force is very common in reports of sleep paralysis. This misfiring of brain signals can be compared with hiccups - rather frightening if not understood but harmless and common.
