You could have driven past the park where you used to walk the dog, or happened to wander down the dog food aisle of a supermarket, or hear a dog bark in the distance. Such subtle cues very often trigger dreams. The dream might also be symbolic in some way. Perhaps a project is going badly at school or work, and you feel like a "dead dog."
