Once grief is no longer constantly in one's thoughts, the dream could have been caused by some place, person, or thing that reminds one of the deceased loved on. Fragrances (such as aftershave or the smell of the garage or wood shop) are particular potent reminders and can easily trigger dreams without one's being aware of any conscious memories.
