Not all naturally occurring phenomenon can or should be interpreted as a sign or omen.

Cardinals are a bright colour and readily visible. During nesting season both parents are extra busy feeding their growing young. There is a good likelihood you have a pair nesting in your area, and this is why you are seeing them so frequently.

What kind of bird looks like a cardinal but does not have a crest?

If it looks like a Cardinal because it is red all over, it may be a Summer Tanager. That would be a wonderful bird to see, because it is another one that is being driven to extinction by loss of where it has to live both in summer and winter. People who do not know what a bird species is, usually do not know how to see a bird to know what species it is, and so cannot explain enough for someone else to say what it is.
