Why not simply ask him. "Is it my imagination or are you being extra nice to me?" If he answers in the affirmative then ask him "Why are you being nice to me?". Maybe he just wants to be friends or rekindle the relationship. A good relationship is about honesty and the ability to share one's deep thoughts, questions, doubts, hopes, goals, dreams, fears and joys. If you both can't commit to that type of sharing, there's not much hope for a rewarding relationship.
