It depends on what color it is. Coatings on the tongue can be anything from plaque build-up that just means you have to brush your tongue when you brush your teeth, to a yellowish painful fungal infection called thrush, all the way up to symptoms of a serious illness. If the discoloration doesn't go away, or if it is painful, see a doctor to find out what's causing it.
