expand is (+)sign means that the folder have sub folders but not display. if you click the (+)sign the sub folders will display, and the sign will change to (-). collapse is (-) sign mens that sub folder are display. if you click the sign (-) the folders will disappear and the sign will change to (+).

Expand generally means to expand the problem. I'm assuming this is a function, you'd expand it into a simpler form (factor things out and such).
When a broken folder/sad face folder appears on a Mac it means the Mac can not find the start-up system folder.
