Mrs. Dubose is an angry old woman. She insults Jem's father, which makes Jem extremely angry. He grabs Scout's baton and attacks the flower bushes, breaking off the flowers. By the way, this is a REALLY good book- a lot of it is about Jem and Scout- you REALLY should read it- I'll bet you'd like it.

Jem committed to reading to Mrs. Dubose every day for a month as a way to atone for destroying her camellia bushes. This task was challenging as Mrs. Dubose was ill and had a difficult temperament, but Jem persevered to fulfill his commitment.
Atticus was mad at Jem for destroying Mrs. Dubose's camellia bushes while playing a game called "Camel." Jem had to roll a tire past her house without touching it, but in his excitement, he accidently rolled it into her bushes.
