Some sources say it comes from the Sanskrit/Hindi word "baramda" that means a "railing" (for a porch), and was in use in the early 1700s. But other sources believe it comes from the Portuguese-- in that language, there is a word "veranda" and it too means a railing or a long balcony. In some dictionaries, it has been suggested that the Hindi word and the Portuguese word are related in some way, but scholars are not certain how this might have occurred.
