How did Cinderpelt save Sorreltail's life?
When Sorreltail began to have her kits, badgers began to attack the ThunderClan camp. Cinderpelt defended them as well as she could, but it was useless. Cinderpelt was severely wounded, and Leafpool, (who had ran away from the forest with WindClan cat, Crowfeather), walks in just as Cinderpelt was about to die. After she had died, Sorreltail named one of her kits, (a grey she-cat), Cinderkit, after Cinderpelt, who gave her life to save Sorreltail and her kits.-With help from warriors.wikia.com.

Leafpool did leave the clans with Crowfeather, but then she came back while her clan was under a badger attack, and took Cinderpelt's spot as a medicine cat when Cinderpelt died saving Sorreltail's kits.
When does Cinderpelt die in the warriors cat series?
Cinderpelt dies in Twilight of The New Prophecy series when Leafpool and Crowfeather fall in love and leave the clans to be together, but are warned by Midnight (when her appearance startles them) that her kin intend to attack ThunderClan. By the time Leafpool gets back to ThunderClan, Cinderpelt had already been gravely injured in her attempt to protect Sorreltail from the badger attack as she kitted. After Cinderpelt dies, Sorreltail names her gray kit Cinderkit for both the similarities between her kit and Cinderpelt and also in memory of her.
