When the groups of charges travel through a cloud, one positive charge may hit a negative charge, thus creating lightning. Lightning can happen from cloud to ground, cloud to cloud, and above clouds. It is usually attracted to metal, water, wood, and other tall objects. When lightning strikes, it heats up the air to about the temperature of the Sun, or more. The air then explodes from all the heat which makes the sound of thunder. So, in other words, it is the cause of thunder.
