Becoming a counselor now...have NOT come across this as a problem. Where you might want to look into is the licensing - LLPC etc. that can depend on the state too.
A mental therapist is a person who helps people with mental issues. So basically, they help them become normal. They don't get paid much at all.

anyone can look at you and tell you you are mental, but I'd get a psychologist's opinion or another therapist to tell you. the question is, do you think you're mental?

It depends on what type of therapist you are referring to. There are such careers as Physical Therapist Assistant, Respiratory Therapist, Occupational Therapist Assistant, etc. at the associate level. Then there are others such as therapists within the field of mental health that are at the masters and more often the doctorate level.
Usually it is a mental state but you can talk to a doctor or a therapist and be diagnosed with depression.
