Back in the 40s and 50s, it might have been common for a guy to play it cool, and act like a French nihilist, saying things like you are special to me, but love is too plebian (common) and I am too hip for that, man. The guy was being non committal and trying to play it cool, and now he is coming back on his knees begging to get her back, but she is so done. Any guy that would tell a woman love is too plebian is trifling and not worth her time.
