King James Version renders Jesus' words: "Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father." (John 20:17) However, the original Greek verb, which is usually translated "touch," means also "to cling to, hang on by, lay hold of, grasp, handle. He had allowed other women 'catch him by his feet' so his objection was not harsh or cruel. (Matthew 28:9) Rather, as the rest of the verse shows he had an assignment for her to "go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father." Jesus did not ascend to heaven at that time so Mary would have been relieved to know that Jesus had a purpose in appearing to her and intended to wait around for some time longer.
