John 2:23 "Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did."

Miracles are marvelous happenings that exceed what is possible according to natural law. They are evidence of the holy spirit's power and of Jesus Christ's authority.

John 14:12: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."

In the book of Luke, the holy spirit's power is called power from on high. It is God's promise to all believers during the Age of Grace. Workings of miracles are evidence of the power of the holy spirit within a believer.

Luke 24:49 "And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high."

The initial outpouring of the gift of holy spirit was on the Day of Pentecost. The apostles began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. A miraculous aspect of this event was that visitors from various regions heard them speak in their own languages.

Acts 2:7,8,12 "And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?"

These visitors questioned how Galileans, whose native tongue was Northern Aramaic, could be speaking in their different languages. They testified that they heard the apostles speak in their own tongues the wonderful works of God. The apostles speaking in languages unknown to themselves but known to their diverse audience was undeniable evidence of the power of God.

Workings of miracles were evident in the early Church, as recorded in Acts, and continue in the Age of Grace for believers today.

Acts 8:5,6 "Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did."

I Corinthians 12:7-10 lists the nine manifestations of the holy spirit, including word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith [believing], gifts of healing, workings of miracles, and discerning of spirits. When a believer has God's Word dwelling in him, he can listen for God's still, small voice and hear if God is speaking to him by word of knowledge, word of wisdom, and/or discerning of spirits. God's message may reveal to him the necessary instructions to believe for miracles and healings to come to pass. In a world full of uncertainty, a miracle-filled lifestyle can give us confidence that we are on the right track with Him.

Mark 16:20 "And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen."
