Does monotheistic best describe hunter-gatherer societies?

This is a often debated topic in the anthropology of religion. Some anthropologists believe monotheism evolved from polytheism. However other anthropologists (like Wilhelm Schmidt) argue that montheism is the most primitive and original belief in divinity.

Is Jehovah's Witnesses monotheistic or polytheistic?

We worship only one God. So we are monotheistic. We recognize that he alone is God Almighty. (Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18) Jesus, his Son, acknowledged that his Father was the only true God, in John 17:3, although he himself is referred to as the "Mighty God" in Isaiah 9:6.People who are polytheistic worship more than one God.For an in depth analysis of BIBLICAL MONTHEISM see RELATED LINKS below

The main religion of the Greeks was .?

There were three main religions. First was the Old religion, pre-Greek, agricultural and decidedly matriarchal calendar worship. It survived here and there in the countryside, and even in some urban areas, notably Ephesus ( the City of Magic - that is female religion). The invading patriarchal Dorian Greeks brought their Olympian system of gods and goddesses representing natural forces and the less admirable aspects of human Psychology, dominated by an all-father sky god Zeus. Over time, Olympianism evolved into a virtual all-male monotheism as the various surviving goddesses were gradually stripped of influence, a process recorded, perhaps, in the Greek myths, most of which really make no sense at all except in the context of this struggle. The absurdity and spiritual emptiness of all-male Olympianism led to the re-emergence of the Mother and the rise of Mystery cults, such as the immensely important one at Eleusis ("Advent"). The Virgin Mother and the Divine Child of Eleusis influenced the development of Christianity and its ritual in which the initiate was "seethed like a kid in the milk of the Mother " is the source of the rabbinical injunction against having meat and milk products in the same meal.

What are some sacred objects of Islam?

ANSWER:There are no sacred objects in Islam. The only sacred 'thing' (and God is not a 'thing', either) is GOD himself and He is unseen. Jesus said that GOD is an unseen spirit. Anything that you can see, hear, taste, touch, or smell is not part of GOD. There is no GOD but GOD.The black stone is not sacred, either. Umar, the second Khalifah of Islam, came to the stone and, in order to safeguard the people's montheism, declared to them that it has no sacredness in it. He knew that himself. Neither does the Ka'abah. There is no power to begotten from amulets, dead saints, etc. The only true doer, is GOD. The only thing that connects us to God - is what is in our hearts which is also unseen.

Does the Quran ask Christians to believe in Islam?

Yes, it calls upon Christians, Jews, as well as pagans and atheists to believe in Islam (submission in Arabic) in its universal sense of full submission to God (Allah in Arabic) as the one and only one God with no partner, no son, no companion, and no associate. This is the basic missions of all God prophets including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (Peace be upon them all). People of book (Christians, Jews) are more emphasized because according to Quran it is the holy scripture by the same God/Lord who sent divine messages and earlier Prophets including Abraham, Moses and Jesus Christ (May peace be upon them). This also explains why Muslims belive in all these prophets and the holy books. Infact a Muslim must believe in all these earlier prophets and books. Question arises that if all these prophets were true and from the same God, what was the need of Koran? Abrahamic religions are based upon monotheism...a single omnipotent God. As the time passed followers of earlier prophets developed the tendency to deviate from initial message with subsequent inclusion of other gods/goddesses/dieties either openly or by implication. These practices and changes resultantly negated the very concept of Montheism. The Koran emphasizes the truthfulness of the earlier prophets and while doing so stresses upon the people not to lose sight of the Omnipotent God.Another point to consider is that unlike Christianity or Judaism (whereby they don't believe in each other's prophets), Muslims must accept and respect all earlier prophets and have utmost respect for them. Even if Muslims criticize certain aspects of these religions, one NEVER finds a Muslim disrespectful towards any prophet. Names of prophets are always followed by the words "may peace be upon them all".

When was the first temple built?

Another answer from our community:Yahweh was undoubtedly worshiped from the earliest moment of time by Adam when He first was spoken to by God in the garden after his creation by God. Yahweh of course being the proper name that the one true God of the Bible was called after this was revealed to Moses at the burning bush. Those who retain belief in the 18th to 19th century idea of the evolution of religion from primitive polytheism to henotheism to montheism put it much later. In the light of recent evidence and shifting theological consensus, it is reasonable to state that worship of Yahweh began in Eden. Worship of Yahweh in terms of the actual use of the revealed divine name began at the time of Moses around 1440 BC.

When did the religion islam first start?

7th Century ADAs per history, Islam began in Mecca, Saudi Arabia when God revealed the Qur'an to the prophet of Islam but....... the Muslim's perspective is completely different, as per Muslim, Islam and quran....Adam, Abraham, Noah, moses, Jesus ( Adam, Ibrahaim, Nuh, moosa,Isa in Arabic respectively) are messengers of Allah and came with the same message of montheism and message of one god and being creator of universe. As per Muslim ,Islam and Quran ... the Islam is absolute religion which exists from the day one of the mankind and Adam (peace be upon him) was the first prophet/messenger of Allah ....and the last being Muhammad (peace be upon him) ......The following verses from Quran proves the point ....And He(Allah) taught Adam the names of all things; then He placed them before the angels, and said: "Tell me the names of these if ye are right."( Quran,Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #31)Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of 'Imran above all people,-( Quran,Aal-e-Imran, Chapter #3, Verse #33)We(Allah) have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.( Quran,An-Nisa, Chapter #4, Verse #163)And remember We(Allah) took from the prophets their covenant: As (We did) from thee: from Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus the son of Mary: We took from them a solemn covenant:( Quran,Al-Ahzab, Chapter #33, Verse #7)We(Allah) gave Moses the Book and followed him up with a succession of apostles; We gave Jesus the son of Mary Clear (Signs) and strengthened him with the holy spirit. Is it that whenever there comes to you an apostle with what ye yourselves desire not, ye are puffed up with pride?- Some ye called impostors, and others ye slay!( Quran , Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #87)

Why do Muslims not celebrate Christmas?

The better question is, why do Muslims not celebrate Christmas? This is because Christmas is a specifically Christian religious holiday - the original name of the celebration was Christ's Mass and then shortened over time to Christmas. In Christian religious beliefs, December 25 is the day that Jesus was born in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph. Muslims believe that Jesus was a major prophet of Allah, but that he was completely mortal and not the Son of God as Christians believe. Basically, it makes no sense for Muslims to celebrate the birth of the Son of God because they don't believe Jesus was the Son of Allah. For a Muslim to celebrate Christmas, or at least the religious aspects of Christmas, would be for the Muslim to in effect be turning his/her back on the teaching of the prophet Muhammed (pbuh).

Why was Muhammad not warmly received in his own city when he returned with his divine revelation?

Answer: Two reasons: 1) because people don't want to obey God - they are too busy enjoying themselves in this short, silly life, and 2) because the people of Mecca earned their wealth and earned the respect of all the Arabian tribes because of the idols they placed around the Kaabah in Mecca. Muhammad came to tell them that all of their idols were false gods - and that only the One God is the true God.
