In a piece of sheet music, the notes are organized on a staff. The staff has 5 lines with 4 spaces in between them. On each page of music there will be rows of staffs. Measure lines divide each line of staff (the group of 5 lines and 4 spaces) into segments that contain the same number of beats.

At the beginning of a piece there will be something called a time signature. A basic time signature would be 4 4 time. (On the sheet music, the numbers will be one over the other.) The first four indicates that there will be 4 beats in each measure, and the second four will indicate that a quarter note is worth one beat. A measure of music with a 4 4 time signature will contain a combination of notes that add up to 4 beats, or 4 quarter notes.

The most basic types of notes are:

Whole notes: worth 4 quarter notes

Half notes: worth 2 quarter notes

Quarter notes

Eighth notes: worth 1/2 a quarter note

Sixteenth notes: worth 1/4 of a quarter note.
