It is essential to the life of many plants. the seeds of some plants cannot germinate without a mycorrhizal fungi present, such as orchids. Many trees cannot survive without it as well.

In this relationship, the fungi and the plants help each other. The hyphae absorb water and minerals by producing a network of that covers roots of plans and increases the effective surface area of the root system. This lets roots absorb more water and minerals from the soil. The fungi also release enzymes that release nutrients in the soil.

In return, the plants provide fungi with the products of photosynthesis.

I got my info from the North Carolina Prentice Hall Biology book by Miller and Levine. I think it is given out in the highschool division only, but you could probably get it from any other biology book or plant book that contains fungi.
