A normal force is perpendicular to the surface. In physics class this is initially a horizontal surface in most problems. If so, the normal force would balance out the force caused by gravity (F=mg). If on an incline you would include a trigonometric function (F = mg sin(x) or mg cos(x)) depending on the location of the angle x.
