The viscosity of a liquid is a measure of of "thick" the liquid is. E.g. Honey is very viscous, while water is not. In terms of motor oil, more viscous oil will thin out less at very high temperatures. Viscosity is represented by the number pair associated with the oil, such as 10/40, where 10 is the low temperature viscosity and 40 is the high temperature viscosity. (scale of 0-60, with 60 being the most viscous)

What is the viscosity of 15w40 motor oil?

Generally people refer to an oils viscosity by the number after the W In your case the viscosity would be 40. Really both number are a measurement of viscosity. Without getting to involved... the 15 represents how well the oil flows at a cold temperature, also know as an oils winter weight. The 40 indicates how well the oil flows when the oil is hot.

What is the difference between single viscosity oil an mulit-viscosity oil?

Single viscosity is high quality oil. Mulit-viscosity oil is used for in the winter.

How do you determine the appropriate oil viscosity for your vehicle?

To determine the appropriate oil viscosity for your vehicle, refer to the owner's manual or consult with a mechanic. The viscosity grade recommended by the manufacturer is based on factors such as engine design, operating conditions, and climate. It is important to use the correct viscosity to ensure proper lubrication and engine performance.

What does 30 means in 5w-30 engine oil?

The 5 and 30 refer to the relative viscosity of the oil when it is cold (5W) and when it is hot (30W). A 5W-30 oil behaves like a 5W thin viscosity oil when the engine is cold, and it behaves like a 30W thicker viscosity oil when the engine is hot. A very thin viscosity is undesirable in a hot engine. In very high temperature situations, an even higher viscosity range, up to 50W, might be called for. Always go by the engine manufacturers recommendations.

What does the weight of oil mean?

Example, 5/20 refers to the viscosity of oil at different temperatures. At cold temperatures, below freezing, the "viscosity" of the oil is "5" weight, meaning it is thinner and will flow easier. At higher temperatures, the oil is "20" weight meaning it is a little thicker to provide adequate lubrication. Lower viscosity oils may provide better fuel economy since being thinner will allow it to flow more easily. Refer to your owners manual for the proper viscosity of oil for you particular car/truck.

How is the viscosity of an oil related to its SAE number?

the higher the SAE number, the thicker the oil and higher the viscosity of the oil.
