That would refer generally to any medical, biological, neurological kinds of conditions or causes.
Dissociative disorders usually develop as a way to cope with trauma. The disorders most often form in children subjected to chronic physical, sexual or emotional abuse or, less frequently, a home environment that is otherwise frightening or highly unpredictable. Personal identity is still forming during childhood, so a child is more able than is an adult to step outside of himself or herself and observe trauma as though it's happening to a different person. A child who learns to dissociate in order to endure an extended period of his or her youth may use this coping mechanism in response to stressful situations throughout life. Though it's rare, adults may develop dissociative disorders in response to severe trauma.
The causes of this disorder are not yet fully understood
Treatment for split personalities, now known as dissociative identity disorder (DID), typically involves psychotherapy, medication for any accompanying mental health conditions, and developing coping strategies to manage symptoms. It's important to work with a mental health professional experienced in treating DID to address the underlying causes and help integrate the different identities into a cohesive sense of self.

The causes to a split personality are actually fairly easy to pinpoint. Even at a young age you are able to create a split personality due to severe trauma in ones life. The trauma would have to be continuous and most of the time it happens to someone rather shy. The mind, in a way to protect itself, would split and add on someone less timid and more bold and standoffish.
