Best Answer

many things but mostly makes a balanced soil so plants can absorb nutrients.

Roots when feeding the plants try to get rid of salts and with bad pH these salts will build up around the roots (looks like a snot ball...eww) and keep roots from absorbing...etc..

Will grass grow in soil with a pH of 8.1?

It may grow, but it most likely will not do very well. Optimal PH for lawns ranges from 5.5 to 7.5 (7.0 is neutral). The lower the #- the more acidic the soil; higher the #, the more alkaline the soil. Lime is used to increase the PH level; Sulfur is used to lower the PH.

How will acid rain effect grass compared with fresh water?

acid rain does not kill, but it can lower the pH of the soil the grass is in. this can release more nutrients, making the grass grow better. Some parts of acid rain is also a scarce plant nutrient (NO3) that makes your grass grow even better.

Will sulfur kill grass?

Sulfur works as a good fertilizer to balance out the pH. If used in optimum amounts, sulfur can help grass grow thicker and greener. It can also help in killing harmful insects. However, excessive use of Sulfur can kill the grass as well.

What does lime do for your lawn?

Lime makes your lawn look really green. --------- Lime raises the Ph level of the soil. Most lawn grass species desire a Ph level of 6.5 to 7.

What is the preferred pH for grass?

Most grasses thrive with a slightly acidic soil. A healthy pH is considered between 6.5 and 7.0. If your soil is lower than this, lime can be used to bring it back up. If it is HIGHER, an application of sulfur may be in order. Note: be careful when applying sulfur to your lawn; as too much can burn your existing grass!

What is the pH of clay loam soil?

Hi in answer to the question there are a few answers as clay loams have a different pH depending on what they are being used for. For grass, clayloam has a recommended pH of between 6.0 and 6.2 and on arable land for crops etc between 6.5 and 6.7 however depending on what has been spread or added to the clay loam can effect its pH dramatically. Hope this helps a little

Does feeding a dog a spoonful of tomato sauce stop the urine from killing grass?

No. Tomato juice is highly acidic, and since dog urine is already acidic, the tomato juice will just further increase the urine's acidity (decreasing pH), further killing the grass. The only way to stop dog urine from killing the grass is to lime the area where the dog has urinated. Lime has a high pH (or is basic), and as we all know, a base added to an acid will neutralize the solution or an area.
