Where does the things you recycle go?

Recycled items are taken to a central depot where they are sorted and separated.

Then they go off to separate factories where they are used again to produce fresh glass, plastic, paper, steel and aluminum.

In every case it is cheaper and more energy efficient to recycle than it is to make new materials from scratch.

Recycled materials are made into new products. Paper is made into new paper (usually with some new fibre added). Aluminum is melted down and rolled into sheets to make new cans and other things. Glass is melted down to make new bottles. Plastics are separated into their different kinds and, yes, melted down and molded into more plastic items. Iron, steel, copper and other metals all get treated the same way.

Recycling saves much more energy than making things from scratch, and saves us filling up the landfills of the world! A good idea, and simple, at last! Now we just need everyone to get on board!

If you mean paper collected for recycling it goes to a paper mill, where it's turned back into paper again, and then shipped out into society once more in the shape of loer-quality paper. Some products, like cardboard and toilet tissue can contain quite a high fraction of recycled paper, while office paper has a higher degree of new material in it.
