Patel is not a Sanskrit word It is a vernacular word prevalent from the times of Moghals, Shivaji, and Nizam of Hyderabad. It is means a village head man, an administartive functionary in those regimes. It used to be hereditary, hence is found in surnames of Gujarati and some Maharashtrian areas.
