Pau d'arco, a plant used to produce an herbal drink called Lapacho or Taheebo, is purported to have anti-microbial and anti-viral properties, helping to destroy bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses by increasing the supply of oxygen to cells. In its traditional use, it is used to treat type 2 Diabetes and ulcers, and it is also used as an analgesic (pain killer).
It has been studied for anti-cancer properties, but these studies were abandoned after it was found that it is toxic or harmful when used at high enough doses to have anti-cancer effects. There is evidence that it may be a reproductive toxin as well.
In general it is not safe for long-term use. Traditionally it is only used in the short-term, to treat specific conditions.
