∙ 14y agoThe term "period" means "a repeating cycle", such as "first period class is always the first period of the day". Or in this "A period of hot weather occurs each summer". For the periodic table the repeating cycle or repeating period is the number of electrons in the outer shell of each atom, which ranges from 1 to 8 electrons except for the first shell that can only hold up to 2 electrons. Atoms with the same number of electrons in their outer shell tend to have similar chemical characteristics so they are aligned vertically in the same column in the periodic table. The number of electron shells and atomic weight of an atom also influence chemical behavior, so different atoms with the same number of electrons in the outer shell won't behave identically, only similarly.
