∙ 8y agoThe abbreviation "ping" stands for Packet Inter Net Groper. It alludes to the 'ping' of a sonar (think of a submarine). A sonar sends a signal out, and times how long the echo takes to return. A computer sends a ping out, and times how long the other computer's reply takes to get back.
