Without a pattern or stitch reference, I can only say that the group of stitches previously completed probably made a "point" in your crocheted item. It's just to give you a visual of what should have been accomplished at that point in the pattern.
It may also refer to this process later in the pattern as in "make another point". If that is the case, the process of making the point would have been in parenthesis or brackets or set apart in some manner.
