Porting is something done to the intake, and exhaust ports in the cylinder head. It enlarges the ports allowing more air/fuel mixture to flow into the combustion chamber, making more power. An engine is like an air pump. The more you flow through it, the more power you get out of it. Polishing is where they polish the enlarged ports, to a smooth finish. There are two types of thinking, as to if this is of benefit, or not. Some believe that a rough finish creates a turbulance that keeps the mixture, well, mixed.
cheep = have it tuned and timed expensive = rebuild it with a hp cam and port and polish the heads.
Next to distributor, on top of the block, at the very back of engine (usually).
Depends on whether it's a 305 or 350...
That would depend on the year and what type of automobile the engine is in.Tough question.
Some carbs had a choke mechanism that relied on engine heat to pull open the choke blade. The center port you're referring to was the source of the heat.
The one on the top rail behind the distributor is 1/8"NPT.

The late 80's to early 90's tuned port engines had multiport injection, along with the lt1, and the later ls1.
