The Psilocybe mushroom contains psilocybin and psilocin. The psilocybin breaks down once ingested to create psilocin. The psilocin essentially attaches to the receptors the chemical serotonin attaches to in the Central Nervous System, since psilocin is almost identical to the structure of serotonin, which is naturally present in the brain. Psilocin works as an agonist, attaching, activating the receptor and then immediately (or almost immediately) dissociates (separates) from it. Many people think that the psilocybe mushroom causes brain damage, but if that were true, so would serotonin, which is virtually impossible to cause brain damage.
The "trips" experienced are a result of a deactivation of parts of the brain (surprising isn't it?). Some parts of the brain stay active, while others are pretty much ignored, or shut down, creating hallucinations and many other effects.
Mushrooms should only be taken in a comfortable environment and with a positive mood. Bad trips can leave you feeling miserable for weeks if you are predisposed to depression or a lot of stress. Be especially considerate if your family history includes anyone having mental disorders, as this may trigger a latent or pre-existing mental disorder in yourself. But if not, then everything should go fairly well if you are in the right environment with people you like and you don't consume too many.
