When a photographer pushes film, they use the film at a faster speed than it's rated for which allows for faster shutter speeds. Fast shutter speeds allow for capturing fast moving objects. If you push film, you need to let the lab that develops it know what speed you pushed it to so that they can process it correctly.

Example: ISO 100 rated film can be pushed to ISO 200 or even ISO 400.
