Roundworms obtain food by burrowing into an organisms small intestines and eating what its host eats. If the worm does not like what the host eats, then it will eat the tissue of the small intestines.

Because "worms" are not really a natural classification, different phyla of vermiform animals have very different lifestyles.

Polychaete annelids (segmented worms) usually burrow around in moist earth/ live in water; they are usually insectivorous. Respiration is usually cuticular (this is common to all worms).

Platyhelminths (flatworms) are usually parasitic, and have reduced guts, etc. They derive nutrition from the host.

Roundworms and non-parasitic flatworms (turbellarians) also eat smaller invertebrates, bacteria, etc.
