If you receive an invitation to a wedding or other fancy event where "semi-formal" attire is suggested, you had better dress up a bit more than if you are going to a high school dance! Suggested selections would be
Women: A knee-length +/- 3 inches dress (aka a cocktail dress), or a pretty pants suit
(no separates) in a dressy fabric such as silk, satin, velvet, or shiny
polyester, with pretty high heels and jewelry. Stylish is fabulous but don't
choose anything too far out - do not try to make an extreme fashion
statement or upstage the bride. Nice coat & handbag, please, though you
will probably check them at the door.
Men: A wool suit. Period. With a good quality conservative shirt & good tie.
Suits made of cotton, linen, seersucker, etc. are too casual and a tux is too
formal. In the summer you can get by with a navy wool blazer and a pair of
grey wool suit slacks, but NO Dockers. Wear black socks & black shoes. No
brown. Unless you are under 25, forget a fashion-forward statement suit - it
will make you look juvenile.
